PB4L - POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) is a framework designed to support schools in developing a positive and inclusive learning culture. It is based on evidence that explicitly teaching and reinforcing expected behaviours creates a more engaged and productive school environment. At Renwick school we are using PB4L to build a climate where students feel safe, supported and motivated to learn.

At Renwick School, PB4L aligns perfectly with our core values:

Be Respectful – Show with our actions and words that we care about people, places and things.

Be Resilient – Give everything a go, even when it challenges us - see it, face it, positively push through.

Be Resourceful – Build and use our kete of skills to navigate the world around us.

How PB4L works in our school:

PB4L operates through structured approaches, including:

Explicit Teaching of Behaviour Expectations – Our school defines clear expectations for student behaviour in our Renwick Behaviour Curriculum and explicitly teaches them, just as they would academic subjects.

Positive Reinforcement – Students are recognised and rewarded for demonstrating expected behaviours, reinforcing their understanding and motivation. This is done in class groups, whānau groups, house groups and a whole school approach using our token system.

Consistent Responses to Behaviour – Staff use consistent strategies to manage behaviours with a restorative approach, ensuring fairness and clarity. This consistency is achieved with the support of our Behaviour Traffic Light which is set out in an easy flow chart style to help guide students and staff.

Data-Driven Decision Making – Renwick School collects and analyses behavioural data to inform targeted interventions and improvements.

By embedding PB4L into everyday school life, Renwick School can create an environment where students feel empowered to take ownership of their learning and interactions. It reinforces the idea that behaviour is learned, just like academic skills, and provides a framework for fostering a respectful, resilient and resourceful community.
